Original brick steps leading to the rear door were crumbling — mortar failing, treads uneven and unstable after years of wear. For an elderly homeowner, the layout offered nothing in terms of accessibility: narrow treads, no handrail support, and a steep rise that made every trip in and out feel risky. When wet — common through Ballarat's cooler months — the worn brick surface turned slippery. Loose fragments and trip points turned a tired entryway into a hazard: effectively unusable without assistance. The bricks were beginning to disintegrate, a clear sign the old steps could not be patched and needed a full rebuild.
